President's Day Weekend Trip

I've been on a bit of a hiatus this week. Took advantage of the 3 day weekend from work and went on spur of the moment trip with my kids. We take winter & spring break when the public school does since some of their friends they don't get to see as much are off. I worked the rest of the week, but spent some of it coordinating getting my oldest to and from a winter break class and working from the library while they were taking a class.

I live in the northeast and I actually like the winter. Been feeling kinda gypped with the weather this year, it's been unseasonably warm and there has been no snow so far. About a week or so before President's Day weekend, I got the idea to go on a long weekend getaway someplace to enjoy some snow. Although, I have lived in the northeast my whole life, I have never been skiing. It's been on my bucket list for years, my kids are old enough so I thought we could give it a try and learn together. That plan didn't pan out for few reasons. Firstly, I came up with the trip idea last minute for a holiday weekend. Secondly, it seems a lot of people had the same idea and virtually all of the ski resorts within a 3-4 hour drive were booked unless I wanted to spend an obscene amount on a giant suite that sleeps 6-8 people for the 3 of us. Lastly, some of those places had been experiencing unseasonably warmer weather last week and had to close some days during the week due to melting. I didn't want to gamble driving 3+ hours to not get to try to ski and deal with slush for the weekend.

I sat down to brainstorm some places we could go within a 3-4 hour drive that would be a new experience. I wrote up a list of places, sights to see/things to do there and let them decide. They had narrowed it down between Boston and NYC. They have been to NYC before, but there is so much to do there, I put things on the list that they haven't seen or done. We also have only done it as a daytrip. Upon doing some more trip planning research I had discovered that Lego Discovery in Boston was going to be closed that weekend and there would be a hotel stay involved so NYC was chosen. More on that in a future post.
