One of the perks to living in the northeast is that it is an ideal climate for hands on learning about where maple syrup comes from.
Maple sugaring is an annual weekend field trip for us. We have gone to the same farm in our area for years and it has not gotten old for my kids. The farmer starts off with a short presentation in the barn about trees, the history of maple sugaring, the process and how it has evolved over the years. Then we go on a tour around the farm to see the different stages of the process from tapping the trees to collect the sap to boiling the sap down to syrup.
The tour concludes with a sweet ending of freshly made pancakes with maple syrup & hot cocoa and a demonstration of making maple candy with a candy sample.
