How We Homeschool

Updated: Feb 5, 2023

I would describe our homeschool style as eclectic, loosely Charlotte Mason with a dash of unit studies and gameschooling mixed in. Partially out of necessity to accomplish some schooling while I work and partially because I believe it is an important life skill to have, I teach and encourage my kids early on to be independent learners. I leverage technology as a tool to help achieve that.

What does that look like?

For my kindergartener, their independent learning consists of watching storybook readaloud videos, listening to audiobooks, practicing handwriting in their workbook, practicing math problems, playing single player games, watching educational show and using educational apps on the tablet.

For my 5th grader, they have their own assignment planner book that I write their weekly assignments in. They do their own history and literature readings then give oral and/or written narrations on what they read. We use video lesson based curriculums for math and grammar so they watch the lessons then do the practice exercises in the workbooks. At this point, they are able to read directions well and do science kit activities and subscription boxes completely independently.
