Homeschooling on Winter Break

We took a winter break this week for the President's Day week. We ended up taking a long weekend trip to NYC, so while we were on break from our regular school routine lot's of education occurred.

Our stops included The Titanic Exhibition, FAO Schwarz, The Lego Store, Harry Potter New York, and Ellen's Stardust Diner. Also, a hotel stay with an indoor pool and lots of walking. On our trip we ended up covering history, STEM, geography, art, music appreciation and physical education.

The Titanic Exhibition was phenomenal! There will be a future post just on that! My oldest has been fascinated with the Titanic for years and this just renewed his interest in it so much that I'm contemplating the Campfire Curriculum Titanic Unit.

My oldest requested the next stop to be FAO Schwarz. Both of my kids love the Home Alone movies, especially the 2nd one when Kevin is all over NYC and of course visits the toy store. My oldest had actually gone once before but, he was a toddler at the time. The kids thought it was fantastic. I'm going to admit in my opinion, it's not as good as it was formerly. I'm still extremely happy that it was acquired and brought back in any event. The toy soldier at the entrance was amazing and I'm so glad he did a little improv behind them as I was taking pictures in front of the store because then when I asked if he and the other soldier would pose for a picture with them my younger child got all shy and wanted nothing to do with taking pictures with the toy soldiers. There were lots of toy demos and they each got to build an RC car to purchase and take home.

The Lego Store was requested next. The line to enter the store wrapped around the corner, but it moved rather quickly. At Lego, they got to sit in a life sized taxi cab made of Legos and designed their own mini figures. If was definitely much more of an experience than the Lego Store at the mall where we live.

Harry Potter New York was an experience. We have been reading our way through the series and have been using a Harry Potter curriculum for a few years. Between the luggage trolley for Platform 9 3/4, Ollivander's Wands, comparing our height to Hagrid and enjoying some Butterbeer, it was an immersive experience in the Wizarding World. We added some new props for our Home Hogwarts classroom.

Our final stop was Ellen's Stardust Diner. It was a considerable wait to get inside, but they agreed that it was worth the wait. We enjoyed some great performances by the talented waitstaff. We got to enjoy the performances of talented individuals that have made their Broadway debut and even one that was headed for a role at Disney World.
